The 2024 BMW i4 eDrive40 continues to impress as a compelling all-electric Gran Coupe, particularly for enthusiasts who appreciate the blend of BMW driving dynamics with EV technology. At its heart is a rear-mounted electric motor delivering a potent 335 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. This single-motor configuration provides a classic rear-wheel-drive experience that BMW purists will find familiar, translating to a 0-60 mph sprint in just under 5.7 seconds. The motor is a current-excited synchronous machine, known for its efficiency and power density, and it's seamlessly integrated with a single-speed transmission for instant torque delivery and smooth acceleration throughout the rev range.

Powering the i4 eDrive40 is an 81.5 kWh (net capacity) high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack, cleverly integrated into the vehicle's floor to optimize weight distribution and lower the center of gravity. This battery enables a competitive EPA-estimated range of around 300 miles, a figure that holds up reasonably well in real-world driving. Charging capabilities are robust, supporting DC fast charging at up to 200 kW, allowing for significant range replenishment in relatively short periods. On an ideal DC fast charger, you can expect to add approximately 90 miles of range in about 10 minutes. For Level 2 AC charging at home or public stations, the i4 eDrive40 is equipped with an 11 kW onboard charger, facilitating a full charge overnight.

Beyond the powertrain, the i4 eDrive40 retains BMW's renowned chassis engineering. It features a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension setup, meticulously tuned for a balance of comfort and engaging handling. Adaptive M Suspension is available as an option, further enhancing dynamic control with electronically adjustable dampers. Steering is precise and well-weighted, providing good feedback, and the regenerative braking system, adjustable through driving modes, contributes to efficient energy recuperation and a natural braking feel. The car also features near-actuator wheel slip limitation, integrated into the motor control, for rapid and precise traction management, especially beneficial in rear-wheel-drive configurations.
