The Rivian R3 is an upcoming all-electric compact SUV designed to expand Rivian’s lineup with a more affordable and versatile option. Revealed on March 7, 2024, alongside the R2 and R3X models, the R3 is expected to be smaller and more budget-friendly than the R2, which starts at $45,000. The R3’s design draws inspiration from 1980s Group B rally cars, featuring angular lines and a hatchback silhouette.
The R3 will be available in three powertrain configurations: single-motor rear-wheel drive, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and a high-performance tri-motor all-wheel drive. The tri-motor variant is anticipated to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds. It will offer two battery options, with the larger pack providing an estimated range of over 300 miles. Charging from 10% to 80% is expected to take less than 30 minutes using DC fast charging.
Production of the R3 is slated to begin in 2027, with manufacturing taking place at Rivian’s new facility in Georgia. The R3X, a performance-oriented variant of the R3, is expected to debut before the base R3 model, offering enhanced on- and off-road capabilities. Pricing for the R3 has not been officially announced but is anticipated to be lower than the R2, aiming to make electric vehicles more accessible to a broader audience.
